The NM Joshi Marg police station in Mumbai has booked a 41-year-old Lower Parel-based NRI businessman for allegedly raping a 34-year-old anchor-cum-actress on multiple occasions.

The case was registered last week, but its details surfaced on Saturday.

The complainant woman works as an anchor in events and is also associated with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

In her complaint to the police, the complainant said she came in contact with the accused person, Viren Patel, at a friend’s birthday party in Andheri in October 2022. As Patel, who is from Tanzania (East Africa), started calling and messaging her frequently, the two became close friends.

Patel offered her to come to his place and stay with him, and later he also proposed to her for marriage in February 2023.

The complainant accepted his proposal and informed her family, friends, and relatives about him. On March 8, Patel came home drunk, and after dinner, the two went to their respective rooms to sleep. “In the night, Patel came to my room crying and telling me that he was missing his mother and asked me if he could sleep in her room. I allowed him, but in the night, he suddenly hugged me and later forced himself upon me. I resisted, but in vain. The next morning, he called his mother and sisters, made me speak to them, and told me that he was going to marry me this December. I was very angry, but after this, I maintained my cool,” the complainant stated before the police. After this, Patel allegedly raped the anchor at his friend’s farmhouse in Alibaug, at a hotel in Pune in April, and then at a farmhouse in Karjat in May. On July 17, Patel was allegedly forcing the complainant woman to have unnatural sex. Frustrated with his demand, the woman called up the police, and the matter was pacified.

On July 27, the two went to Lonavala, but Patel allegedly left her there alone and returned to Mumbai in his vehicle in which the complainant woman had kept some of her property documents and cash.

Since the complainant discovered that the accused also has relationships with other women, she reached the opinion that he was not going to marry her. Hence, on July 28, she filed a complaint with the police.

“Patel would often come drunk and rape me at his Mumbai home, Alibaug, Pune, and Karjat. He would also assault and abuse me if I resisted,” the complainant stated in the FIR.

Speaking to news channels, the complainant woman said, “The accused NRI exploited me physically and emotionally, under the pretext of marriage and using his money power to get rid of the matter.”

The police have registered a case under sections 376(2) (n), 323 (assault), and 504 (abusing) of the Indian Penal Code and are further verifying the allegations, an officer said.
