Chandigarh Police arrest Army man accused of rape from airport | Chandigarh News


The Union Territory police Friday arrested an Army man on charges of rape at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh. He was nabbed after he arrived at the Chandigarh airport on a flight from Kashmir.

Kangra police had booked the 28-year-old accused, a resident of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh who serves as a Naik in the Army, under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the IT Act on July 24.

“We received a request from the Himachal Pradesh Police seeking our assistance to nab the suspect. They provided us with a copy of his air ticket along with a copy of the FIR against him and his picture. We rushed to the airport. Soon after he landed… we apprehended him. He was later handed over to the Kangra police,” said Inspector Hari Om, in charge of the Proclaimed Offender (PO) and Summon Cell of the UT police.

The police said the victim has alleged that the accused sexually exploited her for almost two years on the pretext of marriage. The victim also alleged that the accused recorded objectionable videos of her and threatened to upload them on social media if she did not cooperate with him.

Meanwhile, the PO and Summon cell arrested five proclaimed offenders wanted in cases of bootlegging, attempt to murder, gambling, sexual assault, etc. The accused have been identified as Satish Kumar of Rohtak, wanted in a case of criminal breach of trust; Harish Khurana of Jind, wanted in a case under the Excise Act; Javahar Lal of Mauli Jagran, wanted in a case of gambling; Jaspreet Singh of Bathinda, wanted in a case of sexual assault under Pocso Act; and Anju Garg of Sector 9 in Panchkula, wanted in a case of cheque bounce. The police said all accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
